Hi All.

New to the steampunk community, being dragged in by my friends at Sterling Stars in Durham Region.

One of my ideas is a police officer/sheriff that is part of a mounted unit.  I do want to be able to adapt the costume to match the seasons as well here.  How easy would this be able to be done?  And does it even fit with steampunk?

Here's what Canadian mounted police looked like in the 1870s:

I'm not an expert in Victorian policing, but I recall that there were Dominion Police who were a small federal security force looking like the guys standing in this picture:

They later were absorbed into the new RCMP:

I believe sheriffs at that time (in Canada) were county officials, but I don't know what kind of uniform they'd have worn. Here's what the Fredericton police looked like in 1898: http://archives.gnb.ca/Exhibits/HistoricalImages/Details.aspx?culture=en-CA&ImageID=P350-184

Naturally, in steampunk, you can invent your own variations on history.

Very good, Sir Marlowe, and I complement you also on your research. Any character that fits the genre is suitable, and as usual, IMAGINATION counts for double bonus points (as if anyone kept points,  ) I think the fun issue is the most important thing. Have some.  :)

I think this is a really fantastic idea that will end up working out quite nicely.

Very nice. I like the rumpled look of the uniforms.... gives them the "Sleep in the Uniform so you are ready at all times" look.

PM et al hit it on the nose.  Go with the mounties, just punk it up.  Also, welcome to Sterling, I assume you were at the event last week, sorry I missed you.  Rebecca might have mentioned me as that guy who lied about being sick *grumble*

Everything fits steampunk from cops on horses to astronauts in space thats the beauty of it. Also for a steampunk western thing check out the movie Jona Hex, not full out steampunk but has that kind of feel and the gatling guns on the horse was awesome.
